Baby Cots

When we first find out we are having a baby the first thing we dream about is the perfect baby nursery.

One of the most important items we need to fill our nursery is the cot. With so many cots on the market which one should you purchase? Or if you receive a hand me down cot/crib make sure that you check that they meet today’s safety standards which are:

  • Make sure that there are no more than 2 3/8 inches between cot slats
  • So baby’s clothing does not get caught in the corner posts be sure that they are not over 1/16 inches high
  • The headboard or foot board should not have any cutouts so the baby’s head cannot get trapped
  • A tight-fitting firm mattress should be used so a baby cannot get trapped between the mattress and the cot
  • If an older cot is used make sure the paint contains no lead

Should I get a convertible crib or a drop side cot? There are advantages and disadvantages to both.

The convertible cot/crib usually features static sides with no moving parts. At first the convertible crib is probably more costly than a drop side cot, but because it can be converted to a toddler, daybed, twin or full size bed in the long run you will be saving money as you will not have to buy a new bed and can still use the other pieces of furniture.

A drop side cot can come with both sides that drop or just one. If you are short it is nice to have a drop side cot as you can reach for the baby easier. It is more economical to buy than a convertible cot but once the baby outgrows the cot you will have to go and purchase a new bed.

Teething rails on the cot are optional usually but not a bad idea to have. Another option is casters for easy mobility only when the baby is out of the cot. If your cot has caster make sure that they are locked or off the cot when the baby is in it.

Make sure that you read all the information that is available to you and be aware of the return policy. Before you purchase make sure that the cot you are purchasing is the one you like as it could be very costly to return it.

Have fun shopping and good luck to you.
