How to Design a Captivating Nursery For Baby

By Jan Bay

Finding inspiration for a captivating baby nursery may be more difficult than completing the actual project. In fact, people have told me that a lack of clear direction has pushed them to take the quick and easy route of bringing home a complete set of commercial decorations and bedding that they found less than appealing rather than take a risk, no matter how spectacular the results might have been. Perhaps if they had taken the time to find a particular style or design to inspire and guide them through the process they might have gained the confidence to move forward and achieve a style of decor that was more satisfying.

To find inspiration, you need only to pay close attention to what is pleasing to you in any given day. There’s no need to look so deeply within your self that hours of quiet solitude or meditation are necessary. Make a commitment to make a note when something makes you happy on a visual level.

This is the first step in our search for decorating inspiration. It’s best to practice this exercise while going about your normal day to day activities before moving on to the baby boutique and nursery supply store. The idea is that the colors or styles that please you in your adult life can be adapted for use in a nursery for baby.

Take some time to remember what drew you to a particular piece of artwork or why you insisted on painting your breakfast room sunny yellow. The chances are great that you will see a common thread in what inspired you when designing the living spaces of your home. You will then be able to apply the same principals towards the creation of a captivating baby nursery.

This makes for a seamless integration of colors and styles found in your children’s rooms into the decor of the rest of your home. Once you find your muse, you can employ a color wheel to get a basic layout and move on to step two if you feel the need for further guidance.

We will now face the challenge of finding an inspirational theme. This step is optional as many parents’ idea of a captivating baby nursery relies on color more than any given theme. However, there are just as many that prefer the decorative foundation that a theme based on a hobby, motif or activity gives them.

That’s it! You now have the tools necessary to design a pleasing baby nursery. There are just two easy steps that require little if any hard work before you get to the fun stuff. You may think this is too good to be true but my advice is to give it a try before returning to the path that destroyed your confidence and kept you bogged down in indecision.

Every case and decorating project is unique so there may be a need to repeat the steps if you fail to get definitive results on the first try. The good news is that rarely is there a mother who consulted with me who had to dig deeper than these two easy steps before finding her own personal inspiration for a captivating baby nursery.
