Baby Nursery Ideas – Choosing the Color of Your Baby’s Room

By Ryan Portugal

When thinking of baby nursery ideas one of the first issues that you will encounter is deciding what color the room will be. When choosing a color try to refrain from basing your decision solely on what is aesthetically pleasing. You should also take into account the psychological effect of the color, because it can help or harm the development of your child. Your goal when deciding the color of your baby nursery is to choose a color that will contribute to a comfortable and calm environment. You should target soft and soothing colors as opposed to loud and aggressive colors.

Colors You Should Consider

White
White is associated with innocence, pureness, security, and peace which makes it a great choice of color. It also gives the effect that a room is larger and brighter because it absorbs the majority of the light. If white is to bland for your taste contrasting white with another brighter color will make for a more vibrant room. However if you do choose white as the primary color your baby nursery be prepared to invest some extra time cleaning.

Light Blue
Lighter shades of blue represent peace, unity, calmness, harmony, and tranquility. Light blue is my personal favorite because it induces a state of calmness and relaxation, creating a very comfortable environment. I would not recommend using darker shades of blue because they make for a cold atmosphere and symbolizes sadness and depression.

Yellow
Another great choice for a baby nursery is the color yellow. Yellow is a stimulating color and represent joy, happiness, optimism, and hope. Yellow also has the same effect as white as it makes gives a room the effect of having more space.

Other Colors to Consider: Light Purple, Green, Beige, and Brown

Colors to Stay Away From

Black
Avoid black when choosing a color for your baby nursery. It represents sorrow, sadness, and death. Black also absorbs all light and does not entice any good emotions. Not the type of environment you want your developing baby to be in.

Red
Red is a very aggressive colors and although it looks good on a sports car, it is not a good choice for your baby nursery. Red is associated with passion, energy, and excitement which is not a good mix when trying to create a peaceful environment. Their has also been studies that have linked an increase in blood pressure and respiration to the color red. Although, as the main color of your baby nursery, red is a bad choice. When used in contrast with more neutral colors such as white, it can give a room a bit more excitement.

Darker shades of purple represent power, wealth, luxury and nobility but are also associated with mourning and darkness. Dark purple can also entice feelings of sadness and frustration. If you want to use the color purple for your baby’s room, choose a light shade of purple, which has been known to bring out peaceful and calming emotions.

More Colors to Avoid: Most dark shades
